Summer camps for your special needs child

Despite the cold weather, now is the time to start planning for summer camps. They often fill quickly, especially those on Cape that offer unique experiences.

Camps are one of the most valuable experiences a child can have over the summer to extend and expand learning, along with some fun.

Many children will be eligible for the public school system’s Extended School Year program, which we describe in detail in this previous blog.

If that is not an option for your family, there are plenty of private camps that may offer unique opportunities for your child.

While we cannot endorse the camps listed below, they have been brought to our attention by other parents and professionals.

Check some of them out by clicking on the links below. Insert some summer into the winter doldrums and be proactive at the same time!

This website provides a list of many types of summer camps offered all over the Cape by different organizations at various times during the summer.

The website says the camp “exists to provide a residential summer camp for people with disabilities.” It is located in Vineyard Haven.

Two camps are offered through this organization.

  • YWCA Social Skills Camp in Marshfield: According to the website, this is an old fashioned camp typical of the camp parents may have attended in their childhood.

  • Plymouth Campus Community Camp: This summer camp focuses on specific social skills which “will culminate in an final day of camp outing. There we will have "real world" experiences with our new skill set,” according to the website.

Check out their Facebook page for info: Registration begins March 5.

A day camp in Brewster with registration open now. The website says: “Together with their friends and counselors who come to Cape Cod from all over the world, BDC campers learn to embody the camp motto through sharing; Courage, Hope, Good Spirit, and Peace!"

Contact the camps directly for more information and happy hunting!
